Through Failure
Evolving and Reshaping Beyond Setbacks
When I joined my first improv class, I had no idea I was signing up for a masterclass on failure.
Improv, short for improvisation, means performing without a script or edits. If a scene goes off track, there are no apologies or explanations. You just build on it.
In the professional world, though, the stakes can feel much higher. Unlike improv, where mistakes are simply part of the play, at work we’re often taught to plan, prepare, and perform. However, sometimes it’s not enough to quiet the inner voice that whispers, “What if I fail?” This fear, if it goes unchecked, starts to shape your choices. You take fewer risks, speak up less, and sometimes stop yourself from growing without even noticing.
This cycle usually begins with the expectations you set for yourself.
We often focus on the rewards and forget about the hard work it takes to achieve them. Expecting an easy path to something meaningful isn’t realistic and ignores the challenges you’ll face along the way.
Before Harry Potter became a worldwide phenomenon, J.K. Rowling was rejected by more than 12 publishers. In her 2008 Harvard commencement speech, Rowling said, “Some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.”
If you are wondering how to bounce back from failure. Try “Failing Forward”
John C. Maxwell coined this term. It’s about bouncing back from failure and moving forward. It encourages you to see the positive side of setbacks and helps you recover faster, which is another way to build resilience. As Rowling also shared, “Failure gave me an inner security that I had never attained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way.
I discovered that I had a strong will and more discipline than I had suspected.”
By treating setbacks as lessons and information instead of permanent defeats, this mindset helps you grow, adapt, and stay confident even when things go wrong.
The fear of failure can be paralysing, making you hesitate to try new things or keeping you stuck in your comfort zone. True growth begins the moment you find the courage to step into the unknown and keep moving forward, no matter what. Every setback you face can be transformed into a powerful lesson, fueling your greatest growth, as long as you stay open, curious, and willing to embrace the journey. Which unknown will you step into before the day ends? Take that step and turn inspiration into action.
